C-eh-N-eh-D-eh

Happy Canada Day internets!

I thought a nice little update might be to run through some of Canada's more famous cocktails (as it is a bit of a slow day for geologizing up here).

The Caesar










A purely Canadian cocktail which contains vodka, clamato and seasonings of your choice (generally worcestershire and tobasco). Delicious on a hot day, and great for hangovers ;)


Actually....that's almost the only truly Canadian drink I can think of at the moment. There is of course the traditional Rye and Coke, but that can be found anywhere. Good ol' Canadian whiskey.

Hmm....I guess there's always all that Canadian beer too!

Anywho, everybody have a happy and safe Canada Day weekend. Back to work with me!

Shaken or Stirred

Well another week has gone by, and another craving for a drink has come to the front. This time it was the good ol' martini.
Extra dirty please. Gotta love some olive juice, mmmm.

Just another two weeks left in my rotation up here. Hardly anything at all!

I've been mulling over the possibility of getting some proper stemware when i'm out, but it seems a little silly to get it now, just a couple of months before we move. I may just have to drink my martini out of a tumbler. I'm quite sure it'll taste fine anyway.

Hopefully soon these posts will have a bit more substance to them. Hard to do anything but muse while i'm in a dry camp.

Shame Shame

Well, I am a wee bit ashamed. I really haven't kept this up at all. Hrm. Maybe I should make it more of a resolution to try to update.

Anywho, it is field season once again. I am up at a different camp, no longer on the mine site. Isolation gives me plenty of time to think/daydream about drinks that I wish I could be having, and that is the truth.

Before I came up to the field the last time, I tried a new scotch. This scotch was much different than the ones I had tried before, a better smoke/peat taste. Needless to say, I enjoyed it immensely. Of course, now that I can't have any, I am craving it.

It was this:
Bowmore 12 yr. A scotch from the Islay region.

This has me wondering if i'd enjoy some of the other more smokey brews as well. I will have to experiment when i'm out!

The other problem is that I have a countertop full of booze, and the Mrs. and I will be moving in September. This should motivate me to try some new cocktails to use up some of the excess before we get possession of our house.

Wakefulness.....

Since I am awake, I might as well update.  Honestly though, i've been awake for several hours....

My week out after four weeks in the field has come and gone, and so once again I am at the mine site.  Geologizing has been going well, with the end of our summer drill program in sight.

During my off week I was checking out our balcony garden, and noticed that the mint was running semi-wild, so I did what any good person would do. Grabbed a good chunk of it and made mojitos! The mint we have is not regular ol' mint, but chocolate mint. I didn't let this get in the way of cocktail goodness, and muddled away!

The results were good, but not spectacular. I need to invest in a proper muddler instead of using the end of an ice cream scoop. The girl's drink wasn't sweet enough for her, so I think when i'm home next that i'll make up a bottle of simple syrup to keep on hand for such an occasion.

Since I don't have a picture of our garden with the mint in it, I shall give you a picture of Horace the lovely Sundew that I picked. He is a carnivorous plant!

*Kicks Rocks*

Hm.

Remember when I said I would update this blog during the winter, and then it never happened?
Yeaaaaaaah.  My bad.

I am currently 3.5 weeks into a 4 week stay up at my current drill camp. Things are significantly less snowy, and significantly more buggy than the last time I updated. The drilling is going well, with the "rotary truth machine" teaching us new things about the region all the time. The warm weather, however, has definitely made me want some icy beverages.  The camp that I am staying at is dry, which means that I will be waiting anxiously for my time off to be getting my hands on one!

The girl and I have our summer balcony garden in full swing, and she has graciously planted some mint, which could mean Mojitos, or possibly even Mint Juleps.  Mmmmm.

I have also, for some reason, decided that I need to try a Gimlet. Gin + Lime = ???  Seems like a good plan to me!

I will be picking up a couple of implements when I get home, such as a muddler and a proper lemon/lime juicer.  Darn sick of  hand squeezing my citruses!

That is all for now folks.  I shall hopefully be better at updating this damn thing.  Maybe I should make it like a resolution, or something. Hm.

Winter Season!

Wowzers....I guess I have kinda forgotten about this blog while I wasn't in the field.

Well, summer season came and went.  I have been hired as a full-time geologist, and so i'm back in the field again for the winter!  It has been a balmy -40 Celsius for the last few days, so pretty cold and miserable!

Hot toddys may be on the list for when I head back home, but we'll see.

Anywho, rocks beckon.  Perhaps I'll throw another update on here about hot adult beverages when I'm done looking at rocks for the day!

Gotta pay the bills!

And so I am back in the field again.   After a (very) brief week back at home, I am back up to the lovely land of blackflies and rocks.  This is sounding like it will be the last hurrah for summer field season, so I am making the most of it (read: I get paid more in the bush).

While I was home, I of course tried out a couple of cocktails that I hadn't tried before.  I photodocumented and everything!  Buuuuuuuuuuut.....I didn't upload the pictures. 
Sorry!

For purposes of your imagination, the two new cocktails were:
Singapore Sling
and
Sidecar

I was very disappointed with Ms. Nevermore's Singapore Sling, but reading the International Bartender Association's recipe I think I see why.  I guess i'll have to try it again!

So yes, these makings will be posted up when I get home again, which will probably be after Canadian Thanksgiving (October 11th).
